Glucosamine is a molecule composed of glucose and the amino acid glutamine. It forms the backbone of PSGAGs which are inside joint cartilage. Normally, the horse's body produces Glucosamine with no difficultly, however once arthritis starts, the system of checks and balances can be thrown off, with degeneration getting the upper hand. This is when outside intervention is required. World studies have shown that the administration of preformed Glucosamine (by injection or orally) has the ability to simulate the cartilage forming cells (chondrocytes) to manufacture protoglycans (GAGs). It also stimules the production of hyaluronic acid - an important joint lubricator, and appears to break the inflammatory cycle. This leads to reduced joint pain and reduced soft tissue involvement (specifically, reduced synovitis).

MethylSulfonylMethane, or MSM, is a naturally occurring sulfur compound found in our bodies and in many common foods. It is a raw material for protein, connective tissue, anti-toxins and anti-oxidants. MSM is a relative of DMSO used worldwide in treatments of painful and inflammatory conditions but does not have the foul odour, allergic reactions or other side effects. In its purified chemical form, it is a water-soluble crystal and one of the least toxic substances in science similar to the toxicity of water. Many years of clinical use have demonstrated that MSM delivers the relief and anti-inflammatory benefits without side effects: Inhibiting of pain impulses along nerve fibers (analgesia), lessening of inflammation, increase in blood supply, reduction of muscle spasms, and softening of scar tissue. Recent studies have also shown that MSM may also contribute to an improved immune system and reduced allergic reactions. Vitamin C, can increase absorption and therefore effectiveness.
