Feeding Programs - Beef

OBJECTIVE:

To develop a comparison between Masterfeeds Tend-R-Leen and that of New Life Mills 13% Beef Gainer programs reflecting the growth performance and cost per pound of gain when feeding heavyweight heifers.

METHODS:

Randomly 303 crossbred heifers were divided into six groups in a slatted barn. All six groups were started on the NLM starter ration and transitioned onto the NLM 13% Beef Gainer according to the NLM program. During the first week on the NLM 13% Beef Gainer ration the cattle in pen four were switched to a blend of 50:50 NLM and Tend-R-Leen ration. At the start of the 2nd week, pen four was switched 100% to the Tend-R-Leen ration.

The Tend-R-Leen ration contained 7% Tend-R-Leen SDA supplement and 93% Whole Corn. Mixing of the corn and Tend-R-Leen was done on-farm and a mixing charge of $10.00/t was included in the calculations. Medication in both feeds on a complete diet was rumensin (33ppm monensin), tylan (11 ppm tylosin), and MGA (0.4 mg/day). Vitamin E was fed at 500 IU/day. Cattle were implanted with Synovex Plus at the start of the trial. The NLM cattle stayed on feed 11 days longer due to logistical reasons.

RESULTS:

  Tend-R-Leen NLM 13% Gainer
No. Heifers 50 253
Initial BW (lb) (2% shrink) 917 910
Final, shipped BW (lb) (5% shrink) 1285 1325

Average Daily Gain (lb/d) 2.5 2.6

Masterfeeds thanks Doug Kaufman and Dave Hammerton for their assistance in this trial.
